SCM Jazz Club

The SCM Jazz Club focuses on improvisation, collaboration, forms, ear training and groove/pocket. Jazz theory is discussed with the overall goal of learning to play in different musical settings: duo, trio, larger ensemble and different situations such as reading lead sheets/charts, playing only by ear, or combinations of both. Students learn to communicate “on the bandstand” with each other.

We use repertoire as the vehicle to grow and learn from each other. Students will learn jazz standards, as well as more contemporary music that is jazz influenced, including works by Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Radio Head, Thelonius Monk… to name just a few.

INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED: Students must be enrolled in one-on-one lessons at SCM and know major, pentatonic and blues scales. Students must be able to play at least 2 jazz standards and 12 bar blues and improvise over the changes.
