*NEW* SCM Jazz Club

Steven Gordon

9th grade – college

The SCM Jazz Club will focus on improvisation, collaboration, forms, ear training and groove/pocket. Jazz theory will be discussed with the overall goal of learning to play in different musical settings: duo, trio, larger ensemble and different situations such as reading lead sheets/charts, playing only by ear, or combinations of both. Students will learn to communicate “on the bandstand” with each other.

We will use repertoire as the vehicle to grow and learn from each other, learning jazz standards, as well as more contemporary music that is jazz influenced, including works by Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Radio Head, Thelonius Monk… to name just a few.

Intermediate – advanced students. Students must be enrolled in one-on-one lessons at SCM. Instructor approval required.
