SCM Jazz Club

9th grade – college

The SCM Jazz Club focuses on improvisation, collaboration, forms, ear training and groove/pocket. Jazz theory is discussed with the overall goal of learning to play in different musical settings: duo, trio, larger ensemble and different situations such as reading lead sheets/charts, playing only by ear, or combinations of both. Students learn to communicate “on the bandstand” with each other.

We use repertoire as the vehicle to grow and learn from each other. Students will learn jazz standards, as well as more contemporary music that is jazz influenced, including works by Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Radio Head, Thelonius Monk… to name just a few.

Intermediate – advanced students. Students must be enrolled in one-on-one lessons at SCM. Instructor approval required.

A new offering for students taking one-on-one violin, viola, and cello lessons! One of the more common issues students face is knowing how to practice, and then of course sticking with a practice regimen. We are now offering a once a week led practice here at SCM, with the extra benefit of students gaining the experience and joy of ensemble playing. Instructors will be working out of the method books used here at the conservatory. During the “workout,” students will be led through warms ups and exercises, technique will be addressed, music notation will be will be read, and music will be made!

Highly recommended for all one-on-one students, as we believe the encouragement of the instructor and the camaraderie of playing with other students will have students practicing effectively and willingly.

Students must be enrolled in one-on-one lessons at SCM

Singers meet daily for 5 full days to prepare to sing 2 songs for an evening performance.  Vocal warm ups and technique will be worked daily and various vocal performance concepts will be discussed and put into action – such as arrangement, melodic and lyrical interpretation, phrasing choices and mic technique. This is an encouraging and supportive environment, where students share appreciation for each other and teachers and accompanist offer constructive and positive feedback. The ultimate goal is for singers to leave feeling more confident, more free to express, more experienced and inspired!

Music Literacy & Sight Singing Workshop

SJ Hasman
Teens & Adults
All SCM students (both vocalists and instrumentalists alike) are encouraged to take this course in the study of sight singing. This class is designed to develop the aural skills necessary to recognize, write and reproduce what music students see and hear. Instrumentalists – don’t let “sight singing” discourage you! Learning to hear and anticipate music without the aid of your instrument is a highly valuable skill for all musicians and are likely to be valuable in your musical endeavors.
